Ho iniziato a fotografare matrimoni molto tempo fa. Ho sempre pensato di poter aggiungere un tocco speciale al matrimonio.
Ho iniziato a Milano poi il lago di Como, il Maggiore, il lago di Garda, le isole, Taormina,Venezia e quelli all’estero…

Ho amato la luce e la nascita di nuove famiglie… Cerco di restituire qualcosa di speciale… Una luce, un momento un attimo…
Se desiderate qualcuno di poco intrusivo e con un profondo amore per il matrimonio e per la fotografia siete sul sito giusto!!!

Wedding Lake Como: Blevio

A raining day on lake Como in Casta Diva resort (Blevio). We were really lucky, the rain stopped only three hours, the time to celebrate the wedding and to take some pictures. I was so happy for Carol and Jon. They had the eloping of their dreams in Italy.

Archive Workflow for Wedding Photographers with Sony 7 R II

There is a new beast in the house the Sony 7 R II. After working for more than 4 years with mirrorless camera in to the wedding industry I start to desire a bigger sensor. Micro 43 (MFT) is great, nice lenses, nice cameras, fast AF and great depth of field. At the end I started with 35mm analogue cameras more than 25 years ago and sometimes I really want  something more dreaming for my images so I started to evaluate a new full frame camera. At the end only two remains the great Nikon D750 and the Sony 7 R II. Nikon has two slots, a super battery life and a lot of lenses… And it costs half the price of Sony… Mirorless is, for me, a non returning path… I bought the Sony not because is superior but because I can take it with me every day in my little bag, Nikon and Sony are different cameras, not comparable… So I discovered that I will use it also for my everyday shooting.
In future articles I will cover AF and I will share pictures in a real wedding shooting, right now I’m playing with the camera to become more confident…
As you know 42 megapixel are probably more than a wedding photographer will need and doing a little bit of math shooting more or less 2.000 files for every wedding I will need a lot of space for my archive 2.000×43 megabyte = 86 gigabyte for every wedding x 12 weddings every year it’s about 1 Terabyte… A little bit too much also the files are huge and they will slow down your everyday workflow with Lightroom… Time for me is money so I started to consider if I can do something better… Without loosing the amazing low light quality (I can shoot wedding easily up to 12800  and I’m evaluating 25.600).

My actual wedding workflow with my MFT cameras is pretty quick: 1) Download on my Archive and rename (raid); 2) Transform to DNG without compression; 3) Rating; 4) Post Processing; 5) Gallery on line; 6) Send to clients; 7) Wedding Album; 8) Close the project;  9) Archive also on line.

I started to think to change it  in this way: 1) Download on my Archive, and rename with a temporary name (raid); 2) Convert to DNG ( I will not convert anymore to DNG next time, I will export direct from Raw files); 3)Export new DNG files with final Names at 24 MegaPixel with compression import them to LG; 4) delete temporary DNG  files; 5) Rating; 6)Post Processing; 7) Gallery on line; 8) Send to clients; 9) Wedding Album; 10) Close the project;  11) Archive also on line.

I was a little bit scared when I saw that the 24 Megapixel DNG compressed files was only from 6 to 18 mega of weight….
A great loss from an huge 43 (40–50). Great for Archiving great for speed but and what a “but” what about the quality? What about low light?

I was playing with a Voigtlander 35mm f 1.4 in a very low light environment… (you will also have a link to download of two DNG files) I was astonished by the quality of the DNG compressed files the size was from 50 to 17 mega but the quality at 12.800 ISO really in a dark room was unbelievable.

I will do some more tests but I’m quite confident that I will used 24 Megapixel files
This workflow will save me a lot of time during post processing. Also my MFT preset wok better in Lightroom with smaller files…
The wedding season will start in few days…
Before I will be in Africa for a 3 weeks mission for my Editorial Work…
I will use the sony also for some video shooting.

Un matrimonio intimo circondati dagli amici e dalle persone care. Barbara e Giorgio volevano il racconto della giornata io e Gabriele abbiamo fatto del nostro meglio divertendoci e partecipando ad un momento gioia e felicità.
E’ stato bello perchè abbiamo potuto fare tante foto in bianco e nero (certo ci sono anche a colori) per restituire l’atmosfera invernale del matrimonio.

The Nikon D750 an AF nightmare on wedding… with an happy ending

As I told you in my previous post on micro 43 and wedding photography I started to evaluate other systems because I would like to have something with al little bit more low noise capability and little more tridimensionality (here you can see what I’m looking for in terms of depth of field). After a fast screening I start to think about Nikon D750 and Sony Alpha 7 R II. My friend Matteo has just bought the Sigma 24 1.4 art and he owns the 50 mm 1.4 Nikon so I decided to look for the less expensive combination. After reading a lot my choice would have been D750 and Nikon 24mm f 1.8 it’s really lightweight and not too expensive. So I set up a morning with Matteo to try his configuration the Nikon D750 and Sigma 24mm f 1.4 that is brand new, ready to be used in a real wedding.
First of all the camera is nice, Nikon style, everything is in the right place, the AF is really fast and the camera is not too heavy, I tried to use the screen to frame the picture and… Not usable in real life unless you are in a really quiet moment, the AF will be slow… and the camera very slow… and god I know really well the file my second shooter own a D610 with the same sensor (or very similar) and it’s really nice… not too big, great low light up to 12.800 and something more great dynamic range.

The Nikon D750 with the Sigma is too heavy for me (I’m coming from M43) and definitely I will prefer the 24mm f 1.8 that weights  300grams minus than the Sigma.

After playing around for a while I started to review the pictures on the screen and a nightmare appears… It seems that are out of focus with the lens used at 1.4…

Me and Matteo started to do more serious and consistent test with two bodies and… Unfortunately none of them was able to focus with the lens at f 1.4.  We grab the Nikon 50 mm f 1.4 and  the Nikon 24-70mm f2.8 the bad surprises continues. It was a nightmare none of the cameras and lenses seems to be in focus, back focus and front focus occur…

We discussed a little bit about the AF and we decided to buy the Datacolor Spyder LensCal and next week we will update this article with our calibrating experience.
We will see if this nightmare of Nikon D750 AF will end or not.
We call another wedding photographer who owns a D610 and he did some test with the Nikon 50mm f 1.4 and the camera is perfect.

I am an independent wedding photographer based in Milan Italy, these are my personal experience and thoughts. I’m not payed by someone for this. I hope this article will help others wedding photographers to be more happy with their gear and the producer to try to be more accurate. I really understand the costs involved in quality control, I’m doctor in business administration and I worked as CEO for a multinational company Certified ISO 9000. So I know that you can not deliver camera and lenses at a low price without sacrificing a little bit of quality but there is a limit….

22/02/2016 UPDATE — Calibration Day…  AF fine -tune

Ok after a while we started to try to understand what to do. So we end up buying the Datacolor and starting to check and to calibrate all cameras.
First of all there is a good news: the Nikon 610 AF is perfect with all the Nikon Lenses and need only a little adjustment with 24 mm f 1.4… The bad news is the we calibrated one Nikon D750 and we took the other one to te assistance to re arrange completely the AF system.
Calibrating is really an easy process (if you do not have to take the camera to the assistance) you have to find the AF fine -tune menu and use the lens and make little adjustment. Camera will remember up to 12 lens.

The two Nikon D750 were bought on Amazon with INTERNATIONAL warranty only. In Milan Italy we are really lucky because there is an authorized Nikon repair center that is independent from the national distributor and if you are a professional photographer or a wedding photographer you can have the repair job done quickly.

CONCLUSION

Better to control your AF with your lens before the wedding season starts if your own a DSRL. For Nikon the process of AF fine tuning is easy and not complicated (I believe that is the same with Canon). If I am going to buy a Nikon body I will do some test on the shop and I will do the AF fine tuning test at the beginning of every season. It seems that SIGMA lens need to be calibrated before using.
I start to think that going back from mirror less world it is a painful process…. 🙂 😉
